Kyoto, Japan Satoru Iwata was born in 1959 in the Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan. He studied at and graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology University, where he majored in computer science. Shortly after graduating, Iwata joined HAL Laboratory, Inc. and in 1983 began coordinating the software production and development of Nintendo titles, such as the Kirby series. By 1993, he had become president of that company. In 2000, Iwata moved to Nintendo Co., Ltd. as the head of the Corporate Planning Division, where he was responsible for Nintendo's global corporate planning. Considered by his peers to be the greatest video game designer in the world and called "The Spielberg of Video Games" by Time magazine (May 1996), Shigeru Miyamoto serves as the creative force behind the world's most popular and enduring video games for Nintendo video game hardware systems. Miyamoto joined Nintendo in 1977 as a staff artist and quickly built a reputation for himself. As the creator of the hugely popular Mario and Zelda games, he is one of the most revered figures in the video game world. In 1981, Nintendo released Miyamoto's first masterpiece, the arcade game Donkey Kong. In 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System with Miyamoto's Super Mario Bros. The classic side-scrolling action game set the standard for all future home console video games. Eventually, more than 40 million units were sold worldwide, and a series of mega-hit titles was born, including the 1996 Nintendo 64 best seller, Super Mario 64. More than 184 million video games in the Super Mario series have been sold worldwide. To date, Miyamoto has worked on more than 100 different Nintendo video game titles. As a producer for Kirby and Pokémon games, he has supported younger video game creators. Miyamoto's most recent video game projects include Nintendogs, Super Mario Galaxy and design work on the hardware for Nintendo's next home console. He also was responsible for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which has been called the greatest video game of all time. In 1998, Miyamoto was honored as the first inductee into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. In 2005 he and his best-known creation, Mario, were honored as an inaugural inductees into the Walk of Game in San Francisco. In 2006 he became one of the first video game creators knighted into France's Order of Arts and Letters. Miyamoto holds a degree from the Kanazawa College of Art in Ishikawa, Japan. Kyoto, Japan Katsuya Eguchi was born in Fuchu-City, Tokyo, in 1965. He is a graduate of the Computer Graphics Department of Japan Electronics College. He began working at Nintendo in 1986. Eguchi worked on the course design for Super Mario World on the Super Famicom (SNES) and also worked as the director of top Nintendo games like Star Fox, Wave Race 64 and Animal Crossing. He most recently served as the producer for Animal Crossing: Wild World for Nintendo DS. GDC 2008 Speakers: Takao Sawano led the team that developed the Wii Balance Board for Nintendo's Wii Fit. He joined Nintendo in 1977 and currently serves as Deputy GM in the Entertainment Analysis and Development Division of the Software Development Department. His software directing credits include Donkey Kong Jr Math. and Clu Clu Land. Masahiro Sakurai is a designer and director known for his work on the Super Smash Bros. and Kirby games. He developed Kirby during a 13-year stint at HAL Laboratory and has also overseen the Kirby animation series. He founded Sora Ltd. in 2005 and continues to work as a freelance developer and consultant. Takashi Aoyama was the team leader of the development of Wii hardware's internal programming. He joined Nintendo in 2000, and is currently the Group Manager for the Network Administration Group. Nintendo of America Inc. Tatsumi Kimishima Chairman and CEO Nintendo of America Inc. Redmond, Washington Tatsumi Kimishima was appointed president of Nintendo of America Inc. in January 2002. He is responsible for all of Nintendo's operations in North America and Latin America. Kimishima joined Nintendo at the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, in 2000. He was named Chief Financial Officer of The Pokémon Company in 2000 and President of Pokémon USA Inc. in 2001. Prior to joining Nintendo, he was employed for 27 years by the Sanwa Bank of Japan, with various management positions in corporate planning, international business development, corporate communications and promotions. Redmond, Washington Reggie Fils-Aime (pronounced FEES-oe-MEY) joined Nintendo of America Inc. in December 2003. Fils-Aime is responsible for all sales and marketing activities for Nintendo in the United States, Canada and Latin America. He is leading the launch of Wii, Nintendo's next home console, and directed both the successful introduction of the popular Nintendo DS hand-held system and its library of innovative games. Prior to joining the company, Fils-Aime most recently was senior vice president of marketing at VH1, part of the MTV networks. A graduate of Cornell University, Fils-Aime began his career at Procter & Gamble, and later became senior vice president for Panda Management Co., the world's leading Chinese food-service company. He also served as senior director for national marketing at Pizza Hut, where he launched the Bigfoot Pizza. As U.S. marketing chief for Guinness Import Co., Fils-Aime oversaw all brands, including Guinness stout, Bass ale, Harp lager and Pilsner Urquell, as well as managing brand relationships with third-party owners in the United Kingdom, Jamaica and the Czech Republic. As chief marketing officer for Derby Cycle Corp., he not only directed worldwide sales and marketing for eight separate brands, including Raleigh, Diamondback and Univega, but also was acting managing director of the company's United Kingdom operations. During his tenure at VH1, Fils-Aime engineered the channel's redirection to young viewers that resulted in an overall 30 percent rating growth, and he created and executed the marketing plans for The Concert for New York City, which raised more than $35 million for disaster relief in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. Fils-Aime's professional awards include a Clio, two Gold EFFIEs, an AICP award for advertising excellence and a Silver Edison from the American Marketing Institute. He also was named to the “Marketing 100” by Advertising Age in 1998. Cammie Dunaway Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing Nintendo of America Inc. Redwood City, Calif. Cammie Dunaway joined Nintendo of America Inc. in November 2007 as executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. A seasoned executive with more than 25 years of marketing experience, Dunaway oversees all sales and marketing activities for Nintendo in the United States, Canada and Latin America. Before joining Nintendo, Dunaway was chief marketing officer for Yahoo!, where she oversaw all of Yahoo's! consumer, enterprise and partnership marketing initiatives, from brand and marketing communications to product planning and positioning to execution of customer acquisition and retention strategies. During her tenure she led Yahoo! to widespread industry recognition, including Clio Awards, Obie Awards, the Promo PRO Awards, the 2006 Gold Reggie Award from the Promotional Marketing Association and the DMA Marketer of the Year Award for 2006. Prior to Yahoo! Dunaway spent 13 years at Frito-Lay, in various leadership roles in sales and marketing including serving in roles as the company's Chief Customer Officer and as VP of Kids and Teens brands. While at Frito-Lay, she was named one of the 100 Top Marketers by Advertising Age. Dunaway holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Richmond and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She serves on the board of directors of Brunswick, Inc. She was recently elected by her peers to the board of the American Marketing Association. Denise Kaigler Vice President, Corporate Affairs Nintendo of America Inc. Redwood City, Calif. Denise Kaigler joined Nintendo of America in February 2008 as vice president of corporate affairs. Kaigler oversees all aspects of corporate affairs, including corporate communications, public relations, government affairs, investor and analyst relations, and internal communications for Nintendo of America, and plays a key role in global coordination. Kaigler came to Nintendo following a 16-year tenure at Reebok International, where she served as head of Global Corporate Communications and Corporate Citizenship. She also served as head of Corporate Communications in the United States for the adidas Group, the parent company of Reebok. Kaigler is an active participant in several professional and nonprofit organizations, including Bottom Line, an organization committed to helping low-income, first-generation-to-college students get into and graduate from college, and go far in life. She is a graduate of Emerson College in Boston, where she majored in journalism. Kaigler serves as a member of the Emerson College Board of Overseers. Marc Franklin Director, Corporate Communications Nintendo of America Inc. Redwood City, Calif. Marc Franklin joined Nintendo of America, Inc. in 2007 as director of corporate communications, where he directs the company's overall strategic public relations programs for both Nintendo hardware and software. Franklin has more than 14 years of public relations experience, with a specific focus in the digital entertainment industry. Prior to joining Nintendo, he was the director of public relations for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc., where he ran the PR department and developed short and long-range communications strategies for the company. Franklin has also managed public relations at numerous other publishers, including Midway, Sega of America and Sony Computer Entertainment America. In addition to the positions at those companies, Franklin also ran a successful PR consulting business, working with a variety of high-profile clients in the entertainment industry. Prior to the video game industry, he worked in PR at Wilson McHenry Company and Squaw Valley Ski Corporation. Franklin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics with an emphasis on business and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. George Harrison Senior Vice President, Marketing and Corporate Communications Nintendo of America Inc. Redmond, Washington George Harrison oversees Nintendo of America Inc.'s extensive retail merchandising programs, publications businesses and wide-ranging online presence, in addition to his leadership in the advertising, corporate communications and promotions departments. Harrison joined Nintendo in March 1992 as Director of Advertising and Promotions. Promoted to Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications in July 1993, he took on the public relations and entertainment business development functions in addition to his prior responsibilities. Harrison was promoted to his current position in July 2001. Before joining Nintendo, Harrison served as director of new ventures for Quaker Oats Co. in Chicago. Harrison worked for Pepsi Co. Inc. for six years as a director of brand marketing and director of marketing for the company's southern division. Harrison also spent three years with General Mills Inc. Harrison holds a master's degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin and a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Connecticut. Perrin Kaplan Vice President, Marketing and Corporate Affairs Nintendo of America Inc. Redmond, Washington Perrin Kaplan oversees public relations, government affairs, investor relations and internal communications for the Western Hemisphere and plays a key role in global coordination. She is a leader in the company's top marketing team. Kaplan joined Nintendo as corporate communications manager in 1992. In 1996, she became Director of Corporate Affairs, expanded her responsibilities and built the department that represents the company today. Before joining Nintendo, Kaplan was Vice President for The Rockey Company, a Seattle-based public relations and public affairs firm. Prior to that, she worked as a member of the Washington State Department of Ecology's public affairs team. Kaplan also worked on the Washington State Senate communications staff and was a reporter/editor for KING Broadcasting, Seattle's NBC affiliate. Beth Llewelyn Senior Director, Public Relations Nintendo of America Inc. Redmond, Washington Drawing on nearly 20 years of public relations experience, Beth Llewelyn manages Nintendo of America's public relations activities in the United States, including media relations, global communications, investor relations and the introduction of new Nintendo hardware and software products. Llewelyn joined Nintendo as Public Relations Manager in 1996, and was promoted to Senior Director in 2004. Before joining Nintendo, Llewelyn supported the company as part of her duties at GolinHarris, a leading full-service global public relations firm that still represents Nintendo. Llewelyn had previously worked at several entertainment public relations agencies, focusing on celebrities, production enterprises and special events and awards shows. Llewelyn began her career in 1986, managing the public relations activities for a nonprofit children's museum in Washington, D.C., and coordinating special events for Washington-based government and arts organizations. Llewelyn holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Duke University.
